Camping in the Mitten!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the second week in July!  We have only been camping twice this year…..how about you?  Here are some pics of some of our favorite places to camp in Michigan and the UP 🙂

OMG the bugs have been horrible in the #Mitten already this year. You can not step outside in the evening without some camping spray on, unless you want to get eaten alive by all the mosquitoes. And for some reason they LOVE me!! I have been slowly replacing our personal products at home with all-natural ones. And I love making them myself with my Young Living Essential Oils. Really it’s so easy to do and so much healthier for your family. So next up, I made camping spray. It is wonderful!!!

camping spray

I try to stay away from camping sprays found in stores. Most contain harsh chemicals, including DEET. Did you know in a 2009 study, it was found DEET can interfere with the activity of enzymes that are vital for the nervous system to function properly. DEET can also cause skin rashes, burning and asthmatic reactions. So I of course I opt for a natural approach to preventing those bug bites using my Young Living essential oils.

I hope you love this Camping Spray as much as I do!!

Odyssey of the Mind!

Well we did it!  The 5th grade team from Grand Blanc City School is moving on to the World Final Competition in May.  We are so excited for them……they have worked so hard!  We spent most of the weekend at the State Competition that was held near Grand Rapids.  The kids did not do as well as we thought on their spontaneous problem so our scores alone did not get us first or second place.  BUT they received the Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award.  This award “represents the essence of the Odyssey of the Mind. It is presented to teams or individuals who exhibit exceptional creativity, either through some aspect of their problem solution, or an extraordinary idea beyond the problem solution. A successful problem solution is not a criterion for winning the award; rather, the award is a way to acknowledge and encourage creative thinking and risk-taking.”  So surprised and blown away with this……..BRING ON WORLD COMPETITION!!!!

I had a bit of free time on Saturday between the performance and the awards so of course I headed out to explore a few breweries downtown!  My first stop was Hop Cat where I sampled their special coffee and chocolate brew-YUMMY.

Last stop was Grand Rapids Brewing Company for a BEER FLOAT…..that was a new and super tasty dessert.  Loved it!

Traverse City has a new Butterfly House & BUG Zoo!

Did you know that Traverse City now has a butterfly & bug house?  It literally just opening last Fall & it will be open for the season next month in May!  I’m SUPER excited because it is right down the road from Rob’s (my boyfriend) home on M72 in Williamsburg, MI.

Logo Their Garden is filled with plants and flowers that best showcase the hundreds of butterflies flying all around you.  Enjoy the tranquil water features, and take in the tropical setting. Butterflies are from all over the planet, and will amaze you as they emerge from their chrysalis in their viewing area, and then make their way into their garden to be enjoyed.

The Bug Zoo is home to hundreds of insects from around the world!  Check these out:

  • Tarantula Tree–A large tree that holds some of the largest bodied spiders on the planet.  There’s also education on spiders, including venomous species that live in Northern Michigan.
  • Beetle Boulder–This exhibit houses many different kinds of bugs, including blue feigning death beetles and millipedes and a very large Vietnamese Centipede.
  • Honeybee Observation Hive–Take pleasure in knowing that the bees are safely tucked behind glass while you are able to observe the inner workings of a hive!  Watch the bee dance, and keep an eye out for her majesty, the Queen Bee!tarantula Vietnamese Centipede

This is a MUST SEE stop on your way into Downtown Traverse City!

40 Places to See With Your Kids Before They Grow Up

Are you a travel junkie like me?  Do you love maps & have one marked with all the spots that you’ve been and where you dream of going someday?  OMG me too!!  For me traveling is part of learning……there is something so fresh and exciting about visiting new places and experiencing new cultures and areas in life.  And being able to expose your children to travel early on is vital in teaching them about valuing differences not only in physical areas but different cultures.

DIY Lavender Sugar Scrub

DIY Lavender Sugar Scrub

I like this recipe because it contains ingredients I always have on hand, plus I can eat everything in it. I use this on my face, which is perpetually dry, and on my arms and legs! Cane sugar is a great exfoliator and it doesn’t clog your pores. Make sure you are using organic cane sugar!!!

Organic unrefined virgin coconut oil has so many benefits for your skin it’s truly wonderful.  Coconut oil is extremely moisturizing and has anti-aging properties and may actually help strengthen your skin in addition to removing dead skin cells! Coconut oil is also anti-fungal and antimicrobial.

Raw honey is also a great moisturizer as well as promotes skin clarity.  Again please be sure to be using organic, raw honey-only the BEST for your skin and body!

Lavender essential oil is amazing! Pure therapeutic grade lavender (I get mine here) is soothing to the skin, promotes healing and reduces redness. Lavender is also know as the Swiss Army knife of essential oils! It can be used in a thousand different ways! It soothes anything it touches.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups organic cane sugar

1 cup organic unrefined virgin coconut oil ((This is what I use)

1 Tbs raw honey (Like this)  I use this brand because it’s made in Northern Michigan & it’s AMAZING!

8 Drops Lavender Essential Oil (Get it here ).

1 Tsp of Vitamin E oil (like this)

Mix it all together and seal in a glass jar.

Enjoy!
